Mumbai /Lucknow : Former Indian team captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the president of the Board of Cricket Control, India (BCCI), succeeding CK Khanna.
Ganguly is the first former national team captain to head the BCCI on a permanent basis. Previously Sunil Gavaskar was appointed as an interim President by the Supreme Court of India to oversee the seventh season of the Indian Premier League in 2014.
Sourav Ganguly was re-elected as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) last month. Having served in that post for more than five years, if elected as the BCCI president, Ganguly will be in office till July 2020, before he enters a cooling-off period as mandated by the BCCI’s new constitution.
The 47-year-old was initially part of the CAB’s working committee and was elected joint secretary in 2014. Known for ushering talented young players into the national side during his time as Indian captain, Ganguly has said that ensuring financial stability of domestic players will be his priority as the Indian board’s president.
He also acknowledged that the BCCI is a financial powerhouse in the cricketing world and believes that it is a great opportunity for him to improve the image of the organization which has ran into trouble in the recent past.
